About Tony Gwynn
A 15-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner in right field, Gwynn spent his entire 20-season big league career with the Padres, one among only 17 players to play to have played no less than 20 seasons and spent their entire careers with one team. With his eighth and final batting crown in 1997, Gwynn tied Honus Wagner, the great Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop, for the most in National League history. Along with his .338 career batting average, he earned seven Silver Slugger awards for offense and batted .371 in his two World Series appearances.
The obverse (heads side) design of the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame $1 depicts a glove that, combined with the baseball design featured on the reverse, exemplifies the most basic elements of our national pastime or a simple game of catch in the backyard or on the local sandlot. Inscriptions are: “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2014”.
The reverse (tails) design features a baseball very similar to those used by Major League Baseball. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
