About Cy Young
One of the most consistent and durable pitchers the game has ever known, Denton True Cy Young won 511 games — almost 100 more than another pitcher in history. He won 30 games five times and topped 20 wins an astounding 15 times. In 1901, Young had his best season and became the fledgling American League’s first superstar, leading the Junior Circuit in wins, strikeouts and ERA. In 1903, he won two games in the first up to date World Series to assist Boston to the championship.
The obverse (heads side) design of the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame $1 depicts a glove that, combined with the baseball design featured on the reverse, exemplifies the most basic elements of our national pastime or a simple game of catch in the backyard or on the local sandlot. Inscriptions are: “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “2014”.
The reverse (tails) design features a baseball very similar to those used by Major League Baseball. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “ONE DOLLAR” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.
